Lady Vikings clinch conference championship
SJR State clinches Sun-Lakes Conference and NJCAA Region 8 Championship
For the first time in program's 30-year fastpitch history, the St. Johns River State College softball team has clinched the Sun-Lakes Conference and NJCAA Region 8 Championship, following a 3-game sweep against Lake Sumter on Saturday. The Vikings' latest win total in history stands at 39-13, improving to 21-3 in the conference.
SJR State softball head coach Joe Pound said that winning their first conference championship is big for the program. "It's big for recruiting, and it's a great accomplishment for these players," Pound said. "This team will be remembered not only for this season, but for setting a new standard for SJR softball."
According to Pound, the Vikings will wrap up their season with two more weekends of conference games to determine the second and third place teams in conference. SJR State will head to the district tournament is May 9-12 in Alabaster, Alabama, to play for a spot in the World Series held May 20-25 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
